Our Staff

The Chief makes decisions concerning band related business, community planning and sits on all band committees as a chairperson with voting rights within a quorum. The Chief also has extended duties outside of the community with other bands and band Chiefs or organizations.

Chief Peterson oversees the following portfolios to provide political direction to staff: Housing and Infrastructure, Justice, Family Wellbeing (shared by all Council), Finance and Audit (shared by all Council) and the AVFN Development Group (shared by all Council).

Murray oversees the following portfolios to provide political direction to staff: Natural Resources, Education, Health, Housing and Infrastructure, Family Wellbeing (shared by all Council), Finance and Audit (shared by all Council) and the AVFN Development Group (shared by all Council).

The Executive Director is responsible for the general operation of the Band Office and all AVFN offices and businesses including the supervision of AVFN staff; working with other departments within the band; assisting with the financial administration of the band; communications between the Chief and council and the general public and band members; coordination of council; supporting Band governance and policy development and implementation; and intergovernmental and interorganizational coordination. The purpose of Executive Director is to ensure the day-to-day business of the Band is efficient and flows smoothly.

The Financial Controller is responsible for financial functions of Annapolis Valley First Nation such as accounting, payments, banking, payroll, budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance.

The HR Officer leads and directs the routine functions of the human resources department such as hiring and interviewing staff, administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing Annapolis Valley First Nation policies and procedures.

The METS Coordinator assists band members in making good career decisions, training or educational choices. Provide labor market information, financial assistance to clients and assists them in identifying the resources they need for skills development/enhancements, life skills, and resume writing and job search skills.

The Education Director is responsible for supporting AVFN students and their families from early education to post-secondary education. The Education Director oversees all staff and operations at the AVFN school, including P-12 and adult education.

The Housing, Infrastructure and Capital Officer operates within the band office and within the housing construction field. Communicates with Chief and Council on any housing requests that are provided by band members and foresees the issues are taken care of by construction crew or service providers. Sits on the housing committee and votes to make decisions on repairs/housing needs.

The role of the Band Designate is to be an advocate for the Annapolis Valley First Nation community. They are to receive and respond to notices of a Band member child being taken into care, and work to connect children and families to culturally appropriate programs and community services. They are to work to support reunification and focus on keeping children connected to their family, culture, and community.

The Emergency Management Coordinator plays a critical role in developing, implementing, and maintaining emergency preparedness and response programs to safeguard the well-being of our community members.

The MPAL is responsible for developing and implementing community sports and recreation programming to support wellbeing.

The Language and Culture Coordinator is responsible for supporting community cultural and language programming and increasing language use and visibility in-community.

The Social Assistance Coordinator is responsible for supporting social clients in accessing the program and related benefits, and assisting with case coordination to help clients grow their skills and abilities.

The Finance Clerk supports the Financial Controller in clerical duties involved with the financial management of the Band.

The Maintenance Assistant supports the coordination of maintenance requests and needs across residential properties, businesses, and general community infrastructure.

The Receptionist is responsible for greeting guests to the Band Office and aiding connecting visitors and callers with appropriate staff members and resources.

The Fisheries Coordinator is responsible for the management of AVFN’s Rights-based and commercial fisheries.

The Tenant Relations Coordinator is responsible for supporting community members navigate housing issues and coordinate supports and repairs and for supporting the work of the Housing and Infrastructure Coordinator.

The Health Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Health Centre along with long-term planning to provide culturally appropriate community health programs and services.

The Community Health Nurse is responsible for planning and implementing health programs under the leadership of the Health Director.

The Practical Nurse supports the health team in any capacities needed.

The Receptionist is responsible for ensuring that the office runs in an efficient and effective manner by managing the day-to-day operations, such as answering phone, setting up appointments, record and transcribe minutes, filing, maintain equipment etc.
